Baked apples are known for being a popular comfort food during winter. You can use them to make many recipes, such as the well-known apple pie on Thanksgiving, applesauce, apple crisp, and many more. Apples are in season between September and the end of November, but you can store apples throughout the winter. If you are looking for a new way to use your seasonal produce, we’ll show you how to make baked apples as a dessert or a snack on cold winter days. If possible, we recommend using organic or locally-grown ingredients to reduce your carbon dioxide footprint.

Ingredients:

  • 4 organic apples
  • 1 tbsp. vegan butter
  • ¼ cup organic brown sugar
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • ¼ cup walnuts or pecans
  • ¾ cup boiling water
  • Homemade granola and raisins as special toppings (optional)

How to Bake Apples:

  1. With a knife, cut a hole in each apple and remove the core.
  2. In a bowl, mix the butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nuts until combined.
  3. Place your apples on a baking dish and fill them with the mixture.
  4. Pour the water into the baking dish and bake for about 40 minutes at 370°F, until tender.

Pro tip: Once you remove them from the oven, keep the juice that remains in the baking dish and drizzle your apples with it for extra flavor. It will work as a natural syrup!

You now know the basics of how to make baked apples in the oven. If you want to change the recipe from time to time slightly, you can make a different filling or add any toppings you want to your baked apples. You may want to consider the following combinations:

  • In addition to vegan butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nuts, you can add raisins to your mixture.
  • Make a different filling using homemade granola instead of only nuts. Make sure to mix it well with the vegan butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon.
  • Use vegan ice cream as a topping for your baked apples – perfect for a dessert!
  • Serve your baked apples with homemade vegan yogurt.

We don’t recommend preparing the apples in advance since they get brown quickly. If you’d like to prepare the recipe ahead of time, you can make the granola beforehand and store it in a glass container for up to 10 days. If you want to fill the baked apples with only nuts instead, you can prepare the nut mix in advance and keep it in the fridge as long as you use it for baking your apples on the same day.
