There’s nothing quite like a fresh loaf of bread, but sometimes you end up with more than you can finish before it goes stale. The good news is that you can easily freeze bread for later use. So next time your local bakery is having an end-of-day sale, feel free to stock up. You can enjoy that delicious bread sometime in the future, frozen bread is typically good for up to 6 months.

There are also a few ways to store your bread in order to extend the shelf life at room temperature:

  • Wrap the loaf in a cloth bag, or in a tea towel.
  • Keep it in a drawer or airtight tin.
  • Wrap the loaf in a reusable beeswax wrap (available on Amazon**).

You can easily freeze whole loaves of bread, or single slices. How you choose to do it is up to you, but it helps to think about how you want to use it. If you want to have bread on hand to toast, or make sandwiches, consider slicing it up before freezing so you can take out exactly what you need.

How to Freeze Bread:

  1. Wrap a whole, or sliced loaf in reusable beeswax wrap, and place it in the freezer.
  2. If your loaf came in a paper bag, you can freeze it as is.
  3. Toss slices into a large silicone bag, which can be stored in your freezer.
  4. Use a cotton or linen bread bag to freeze your bread in.
  5. Place sliced bread into a reusable container to store in the freezer.

Defrosting Frozen Bread

If you’ve frozen a whole loaf of bread, leaving it out on the counter at room temperature for a few hours should give it enough time to defrost. For individual slices, you can add them to the toaster directly from the freezer, or bake them in the oven for 5-10 minutes to thaw.
