Out of tomato puree and need a quick solution? Here are the most reliable tomato puree substitutes to swap in place of the traditional puree.

Tomato puree is often used in cooking to make sauces or a kind of dip. These sauces and dips have a thick consistency and it can sometimes be acidic for sensitive stomachs. If you want something lighter or you run out when you cook your next pizza, pasta, or puree dish, use the following tomato puree substitutes.

1. Tomato Paste and Water

A simple substitute for your tomato puree is simply tomato paste and water. This will not only give you the taste you’re looking for, it also comes closest in terms of consistency. Adding the paste, with necessary water to make it saucy for your pizza, pasta, or other puree dish, can be a delicious mild substitute. Replace any tomato puree with equal parts water and tomato paste.

2. Tomato Puree Substitutes: Ketchup

Another option you may possibly use is ketchup. The important thing to know about replacing your puree with ketchup is that the flavor of your finished product will be altered. While puree is made solely from fresh tomatoes, ketchup includes ingredients like vinegar, sugar, and other spices you may not put onto your original meal plan. It is recommended to use this in recipes where only a small amount of tomato puree is necessary.

3. Marinara Sauce

Marinara sauce is another tomato puree substitute you can use in a pinch. Much like ketchup, the ingredients of this sauce will most likely alter the flavor of your finished dish. This would be better in dishes like pasta or pizza, rather than a dipping sauce or topping. Marinara sauce contains tomatoes, garlic, onions, herbs, and spices.

4. Tomato Puree Substitutes: Condensed Tomato Soup

If you are using a bit of puree for a curry or thick sauce, you can use condensed canned tomato soup. Simply add it to your dish as you would the puree and add a small amount of water.

5. Real Tomatoes

Simply enough you can substitute tomato puree with real tomatoes. Cut them into halves and remove the stems before blending and straining. You can add water if you need something not so thick. Apply it to your dish and you have found a fresh tomato puree alternative.

6. Tomato Puree Substitutes: Tomato Sauce

A can of tomato sauce is another alternative to paste although it is not as thick or fresh as the puree. You can use this easily for pasta dishes. If you want to thicken the paste for a pizza or curry you can add cornstarch or boil out liquid by letting it simmer.

7. A Jar of Salsa

Using tomatoes and onions, salsa is an excellent tomato puree substitute. This adds the subtle flavor of onion and spices, and has a consistency that can easily be thickened or thinned depending on your preferences. Simply use a jar of salsa to replace the amounts of puree in your meal and lower the amount of onion you use as it already contains some.
