We all know you can recycle paper, cardboard and plastics, but did you know some metal can also be recycled? Read on for examples of scrap metal to recycle.

Are you getting rid of an old washing machine or replacing your ugly old metal garden fence? If you’re wondering what to do with old railings, fences and other metals, a lot of them can actually be recycled. So don’t just throw those scraps in the trash — you may be able to recycle or get money for them. Read on for some examples of scrap metal that can be recycled.

Whether or not you can recycle scrap metal typically depends on its weight, which is generally measured per pound or ton. To determine what your local scrap yard will accept, check out the iscrapapp. This app also gives advice on the current market price of each type of metal, as prices fluctuate.

1. Examples of Scrap Metal: Aluminium

Most of us can recycle aluminium cans curbside or at the local supermarket. However, there is other aluminium in the home, like window frames, doors and gutters. Making aluminium is a high-energy process, so recycling it is important and can save energy. That said, its monetary value is relatively low. You can spot aluminium by its silvery-white color and flexible qualities.

2. Copper

Copper can be found in electrical cables and is easily recognizable due to its luminous, rusty brown sheen. You can find it in roof materials, air conditioning units and in plumbing. Copper has a high market value, so check if your local scrap yard accepts it to get a few extra dollars in your pocket.

3. Examples of Scrap Metal: Steel

Steel has many functions — in cutlery, furniture, washing machines, refrigerators and cars, among others. It rusts easily and is distinguishable by its shiny gray appearance. Steel has a low resale value, so you’ll need to accumulate a lot of it to make it worthwhile. That said, it can be recycled over and over again, so it’s worth it for the planet.

4. Brass

You can find brass in fixtures and fittings around the house, such as door handles, pipes, light fittings and keys. This warm golden metal tends to be on the heavy side, so it is easy to collect enough to recycle.

If you’re looking for more examples of scrap metal that can possibly get you some extra cash or you’d like to dispose of responsibly, contact your local recycling center or scrap yard.
