Accidents happen, even to our small furry friends. Although it's never a fun activity, this guide will teach you how to get dog poop out of your carpet without making a bigger mess.
These things happen, even to the most well-trained pups. As with all stains, the best thing for you to do is to treat your furry pal’s accident as soon as you possibly can. Nose plugs at the ready, read on for the best way to clean dog poop out of your carpet using natural ingredients.
While it may be annoying for you, don’t punish your dog. They won’t understand why you’re punishing them. Instead, try to refresh your dog’s house training through positive reinforcement. Also, don’t let your dogs back in the room while you are soaking the stain. They might try to eat or lick up the solution and could possibly get sick.
What You Will Need:
- Rubber gloves
- Strong piece of cardboard or a dustpan
- Doggy poop bags
- Bucket
- Sponge
- Warm water
- Soap
- Old cloth or paper towel alternative
- Apple cider vinegar
- Baking soda
- Spray bottle
- Vacuum cleaner
How to Clean Dog Poop Out of Carpet
- With the rubber gloves on, scrape up as much of the poop as possible using the cardboard or dustpan.
- Place this in one of your doggy poop bags and dispose of the poop responsibly.
- In the bucket, mix warm water with a bit of soap.
- Use the sponge to blot a little of the warm water and soap onto the effected area. DO NOT SCRUB! This will just disperse the mess further into your carpet.
- Let the water and soap soak into the area.
- Press down hard onto the affected area using the old cloth or towel. You can also stand on the cloth so it really pushes into the carpet and absorbs as much of the soap and poop as possible.
- Repeat steps 4 to 6 until it is no longer making a visible difference. Be careful not to over saturate your carpet with water, however.
- Dry the area with a fresh cloth using the same standing method until dry.
For best results, follow this with a baking soda and vinegar treatment:
- Mix up a solution of equal parts vinegar and warm water and place into a spray bottle.
- Sprinkle some baking soda over the affected area.
- Spritz the water and vinegar solution over the baking soda and let sit for about 10 minutes.
- Use the blotting technique to soak up the excess.
- Repeat this as many times as you deem necessary.
For extra odor removal:
- Sprinkle some baking soda over the affected area and let it sit on the stain overnight.
- Vacuum it up the next morning.
How to Clean Dog Poop Out of Upholstery and Fabrics
If your furry friend has managed to leave their unwanted gifts on some of your upholstery, the same rules apply. The faster you act, the more successfully you will be able to remove the stain.
- If you can remove the item, such as a cushion cover, do so immediately and rinse away any excess poop with warm water.
- Soak the item in warm soapy water for about 10 minutes.
- Ring out the excess water.
- Follow the vinegar treatment as described above.
- Put the item in the washing machine, making sure to follow care instructions. Do not be tempted to wash on a higher temperature, as this could potentially set the stain into your fabric.
- Dry your laundry naturally, by hanging it in the sun.
