Insects are the most diverse group of animals in the world. We’ll show you three bug identifier apps, including their benefits and potential drawbacks.
If you are curious about bugs and insects, a bug identifier app can help you recognize thousands of species. There are around 900 thousand identified insect species on the planet, so it can be difficult to know which insect you may be looking at. Using a bug identifier app means you have an insect field guide on your phone, as it allows you to identify insects and differentiate insect species from one another. Identifier apps allow you to take a picture of an insect, and the app will tell you which species it is, as well as more information.
1. Insect Identification
Insect Identification is an easy-to-use and reliable bug identifier app. It is free, and is available on both the Apple App Store and Google Play. To identify a bug using the app, you first need to click the plus button. You can then either take a picture, or upload an image of the bug that you would like to identify. The app will analyse the photo, and tell you the identified species based on their high-quality database of bug species. Although the app does contain ads, they do not get in the way of the main function of the app. If the ads bother you, you can pay to upgrade to a premium version that does not contain ads.
2. Picture Insect: Bug Identifier
Picture Insect: Bug Identifier is another great bug identifier app. You can download the app from either the Apple App Store or Google Play, and the basic features are free, with a premium version available. The app works by the user taking a picture of the insect that they wish to identify, and uploading it to the app. The app then searches through their database of over 1000+ insects in order to identify the correct species, with what they claim is a 95.28 percent accuracy rate. Once the app has identified the species, it gives you more information about the specific insect including more photos, commonly asked questions, and a description of the insect. The app also provides you with identifying advice and more information on species by entomologists. You can create a database of all the insects that you have identified, in order to keep track of your personal collection.
Seek by iNaturalist is a bug identifier app that uses AI image recognition technology to identify insects. The app is available on the Apple App Store and Google Play, and it is free to download. Not only does the app allow you to identify insects, but it will also identify other types of wildlife such as plants and fungi that you may be interested in. To use the app, you first need to either upload an image of an insect, take an image, or hover your phone over the insect you wish to identify. The app will analyse the image and identify the insect in real time. If the app is unable to identify the insect, it will still be able to give you other information such as the genus, family, order, or class of the insect. A great feature of the app is that it also allows you to earn badges for observing different types of species and participating in various challenges, which makes it a great choice for kids.
