Making Guacamole is simple — you’ll just need ripe avocados and a few other ingredients. But did you know you can freeze guacamole? Read on to find out how.
Freezing guacamole is easy and straightforward and a great solution if you have lots of avocados that are ripe at the same time.
Avocados grow all year round in California and in Florida from June to January. The price can be high, so if you see them on sale you may want to buy them in bulk and then freeze the guacamole to enjoy later.
Below, you’ll find a quick and easy guacamole recipe, plus one trick to ensure the success of your frozen guacamole.
Guacamole Recipe
Ingredients:
- 2 ripe avocados, peeled, pitted and diced
- 2 chopped garlic cloves
- 1 Tsp. salt
- 2 Tsp. lime juice
- 1 Tbsp. olive oil
Optional extras for after thawing:
- 1 chopped tomato
- 1/4 chopped red onion
- 1/2 chopped and seeded red jalapeno pepper
Instructions:
- Put all ingredients in a large bowl.
- Mash the ingredients using a potato masher or fork.
- TRICK! Don’t add any other ingredients like tomatoes or onions, they will become watery after thawing. Add them later after defrosting the guacamole.
How To Freeze Guacamole
- Use a number of small containers so that you don’t have to thaw the whole batch at once.
- Put the guacamole in the containers and leave an inch of space at the top to allow for expansion when freezing.
- Optional: put some olive oil on the top of the guacamole to prevent it from browning.
- To thaw, pop the container in the fridge for 1-2 days, or put in a bowl of room temperature water.
- Finally, transfer to a serving bowl and stir well. Now you can add the other ingredients such as chopped tomatoes, red onion or jalapeno peppers.
Sustainable Containers to Freeze Food
To freeze guacamole you need some food containers, there are a few suitable options available. Plastic containers often contain BPA (bisphenol A), which can be harmful to our health, they are also unsustainable as they don’t decompose. However, if you do decide to choose plastic containers there are BPA-free options available on Amazon**.
One alternative storage option is glass jars (or mason jars, available on Amazon**). You could buy them, or reuse the screw-top jars in your pantry such as from peanut butter and jelly. You can also buy rectangular glass storage containers with lids, similar to the plastic ones we’re all used to.
Another alternative container option is stainless steel containers (available on Amazon**), they are super for sustainability as steel is 100% recyclable and they are BPA-free. Silicone, such as Vremi containers, (available on Amazon**) isn’t biodegradable, but is more durable than plastic which results in less waste. However, a lot of energy is used in the production process and silicone is not biodegradable or recyclable.
