If you’re wondering how to get scratches out of sunglasses, you may be surprised to learn that there are simple steps you can take at home. We’ll show you two simple methods.
Scratches on sunglasses are a common dilemma, because our tinted eye protectors tend to get a lot of use. The best way to prevent scratches in the first place is to keep them in a protective case when you’re not wearing them. The reality, however, is that most of us do not protect our shades in the same way they protect us. The result is usually breakages or scratched lenses. The good news is that you can get scratches out of sunglasses in just a few easy steps — without even leaving the house. Try these two methods to get scratches out of your sunglasses quickly and easily
Method 1: Remove Sunglass Scratches With Baking Soda
Baking soda and water make the perfect duo for scratch-free sunglasses. You may already use baking soda as a natural DIY air freshener, carpet cleaner, bathtub cleaner. and even a way to clean your tongue. Its cleaning powers make baking soda an ideal way to naturally remove scratches. The ingredients are likely in your home already and neither will have negative impacts on your or the planet. This combo can also be used on glass or plastic lenses and will not cause damage to anti-glare or other special coatings.
Materials:
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- A few drops of vinegar
- Reusable cloth
Instructions:
- Mix one teaspoon of baking soda with a few drops of vinegar until you form a paste.
- Gently rub the paste into the scratched area in a circular motion with your finger or a soft, reusable cloth (we recommend avoiding microfiber cloths, which can leech microplastics in our oceans). Rub the area without applying much pressure, being careful to avoid the frames and keep the paste on the lens area.
- Rinse thoroughly under warm water to remove all residue.
- Dry and shine with a fresh cloth.
Note: If you do not have a suitable cloth, recycle old clothes made from soft fabrics instead of throwing them out. Do not use abrasive fabrics on your lenses or you will make scratches worse.
Method 2: Get Scratches Out With Rubbing Alcohol
Rubbing alcohol might seem abrasive or even toxic to us and the planet — but it isn’t when used correctly. Isopropyl alcohol actually poses minimal risk to the environment and is being studied as a safer alternative to commercial cleaning ingredients. It is also an ideal product for removing ink stains.
This product can be toxic if directly inhaled. It may also cause irritation and is highly flammable, so caution is advised. The good part is that rubbing alcohol will help you get scratches out of your sunglasses and leave your lenses sparkling and transparent. Do not apply it directly though! It may cause damage to the lens coating.
