It helps to treat a bruise shortly after you see it develop, and you can do so using these natural methods:

  1. Ice will reduce blood flow to the injured area on your skin. By applying ice immediately to the injured area, you are cooling the blood vessels, which can reduce swelling as well as the amount of blood leaking into surrounding tissue. Simply apply a reusable ice pack or just grab a bag of frozen vegetables from the freezer wrapped in a dishcloth and ice your bruise for ten minute intervals. Wait 20 minutes before reapplying the ice to the bruise.
  2. Heat on a bruise will increase blood flow, boost circulation and reduce swelling and pain. Trapped blood will move away from the injured area and relieve bruise symptoms. Apply a heat pad or a hot water bottle to the bruise for ten-minute intervals until pain and swelling has reduced.
  3. Arnica is a homeopathic herb that reduces swelling, helps to control bruising and eases recovery to injuries. Apply arnica gel or ointment to the bruise three to five times a day until your bruise disappears.
  4. Compression helps to reduce swelling and pain. By wrapping the bruise in an elastic bandage, this will squeeze the surrounding tissue and prevent the leaking of blood vessels. Hold the elastic bandage in place for ten minutes at a time. Leave for 20-minute intervals between using compression on the bruise. Repeat three to five times.
  5. Aloe vera may reduce inflammation and pain and can be applied topically to bruises. Apply aloe vera gel to the bruise at least five times a day to help with pain, swelling, and marking.

Unfortunately, some of us are born clumsy, and will never be able to avoid the corner of the coffee table or banging into door frames. However, there are a few things you can do to help avoid bruising:

  • De-clutter your household, as this may reduce the risk of banging into hard objects.
  • Move large furniture items out of walkways and doorways.
  • Wear protective gear when playing contact sports, or home renovations.
  • Eat a well-balanced diet, including plenty of vitamins.
