Perhaps you’re looking to cut your persimmon into bite-size chunks, or maybe you want to prepare the fruit as part of a recipe. Either way, cutting a persimmon is fairly straightforward. If you want to get the most fruit out of it, then you should use the following steps below. All you will need is your persimmon and a knife.

Here’s how to cut your persimmon to get the most fruit:

  1. Using your knife, cut around the base of the stem.
  2. Remove the stem from the persimmon.
  3. Cut your persimmon down the center into two halves.
  4. Remove the white core with your knife. Be careful not to cut yourself while doing this.
  5. Finally, slice the persimmon to your desired preferences.
  6. Throw the core and stem into your compost.

Now your persimmon is ready to consume however you want. The peel is edible, so whether you want to remove it is completely your choice.

Once you have your persimmon cut up into slices or chunks, you’ll want to prepare them to eat. We’ll show you how to use persimmons in your cooking and the different ways you can consume them.

Persimmon can be eaten raw, the same way you’d eat an apple or a pear. However, they have other uses as well, including:

  • Baking: You can bake persimmons into bread, muffins, and cookies.
  • Jam: Whip up some persimmon jam to add some extra flavor to your favorite snack.
  • Risottos & Stews: Add to your risottos or stews to add an extra punch of flavor.
  • Salads: Mix persimmon into your favorite salad or a quick fruit salad.
  • Toast: Add to your toast alongside honey, ricotta, and pepper.

You should always make sure your persimmon is ripe before eating it. To check if it is ripe, you should check the color and feel of the persimmon. It should be a bright orange color to dark purple and should range from firm to slightly soft when squeezed. The skin of the fruit should be shiny. Unripe persimmons are extremely bitter and should not be consumed. An unripe persimmon can be identified through its color and feel — it will be green and hard.

If you want to speed up the ripening process, try placing your persimmons next to apples. Apples help to ripen other fruits that are within close proximity due to the release of a gas called ethylene. This gas is a natural plant hormone that helps to speed up the ripening process.
