Popcorn is a classic snacking favorite, but have you ever tried nutritional yeast popcorn? We’ll show you how to make this tasty vegan snack at home.

The key to good popcorn is the corn kernel itself. Ideally, you’ll want to source kernels that, when popped, are almost twice the size of the kernel before cooking. Better yet, opt for corn kernels that are locally sourced and organic where possible.

In case you haven’t heard of it, nutritional yeast is a fantastic plant-based variation of the typical popcorn recipe. Nutritional yeast will give your popcorn an almost addictive cheesy flavor that is hard to resist, and best of all, it is packed with protein, which will be appreciated by vegans and vegetarians alike. Often touted as a super food, nutritional yeast is rich in healthy nutrients that will make munching on loads of popcorn a guilt-free pleasure.

The most important factors in any popcorn-making method are sustainability and kernel-to-popcorn yield. We recommend placing your corn kernel in the microwave-safe glass bowl with a lid. This waste-free option will also ensure that you’ll get the highest amount of popped kernels every time.

Ingredients

  • Organic popcorn kernels
  • Nutritional Yeast
  • Salt
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. First of all, you will need to pop your corn kernels. As already mentioned, using a reusable popcorn popper in the microwave will glean the best results, but if you are a master at popping your corn kernels on the stovetop without burning any of them (or if you don’t happen to have a microwave), this will work too.
  2. Pour your popcorn into a big bowl. This will make mixing in your final ingredients a far less messy affair.
  3. Without going overboard (you don’t want to make your popcorn a soggy oil-soaked mess), drizzle in your extra virgin olive oil, just enough to lightly coat your popcorn. A couple of tablespoons is usually plenty.
  4.  Next, sprinkle in a little bit of salt, to begin with. It’s best to start with a smaller amount and add more if desired.
  5. Lastly, it’s time to add your nutritional yeast. As with the salt, add a little, then add more to suit your tastes. But given that nutritional yeast has a deliciously cheesy flavor, you will likely find yourself likely adding more rather than less. Toss to coat.
  6. Snack away!
