Avocado seeds are packed with ingredients that can be enjoyed in a variety of ways. While they should not be eaten, avocado seed benefits are plentiful!
Avocado seeds contain fiber and antioxidants. While some preach the benefits of ingesting avocado seeds, there is insufficient research to verify the safety of this. We do not recommend the consumption of avocado seeds as they can potentially be toxic. Even so, there are many other ways you can reap the benefits of avocado seeds without eating them.
1. Keep Your Guac Fresh
One smart way to use your avocado seeds is to keep your guacamole fresh. Next time you have leftovers, pop the seed in with your bowl of guacamole and cover with a wax cloth or other natural plastic wrap alternative. You can do the same when you want to use only half an avocado: use the seedless half for your meal and put the other half back in the fridge, leaving the seed in place. This helps keep your avocado from oxidizing and browning.
2. Skin Exfoliant
Avocado seeds offer a sustainable alternative to the microplastics often found in soaps. Next time you want to exfoliate your skin, consider popping some avocado seed pieces into your body or face wash. All you need to do is first dry the seeds at 250°F for two hours. Of course, heating up the oven for just one avocado seed would be a waste of energy — ideally dry an oven tray full or find something else that needs drying at high heat. Once they’re cooled down, chop them up into small pieces or use a food processor or blender. You can keep them in a jar in your bathroom and use as needed.
3. Anti-Aging Eye Cream
One of the benefits of avocado seeds is that using them might help decrease the visibility of wrinkles, making them a great natural alternative to store-bought eye creams. For especially moisturizing eye cream, we recommend using avocado seeds in combination with an oil such as coconut oil or avocado oil.
To make your own all-natural eye cream, follow these steps:
- Place avocado seeds in the oven 250°F for two hours.
- Set them aside to cool.
- Once cooled down, chop up the seeds and place them in a food processor or blender.
- Blend the pieces until a powder forms.
- Add a few teaspoons of coconut or avocado oil to the powder until creamy paste forms.
- Store your homemade eye cream in the fridge for up to two months.
4. Plant an Avocado Tree and Reap the Avocado Seed Benefits For Life
Possibly the most obvious way to enjoy the benefits of avocado seeds is to plant them! If you have the space for an avocado tree, you can plant your seed and enjoy fresh avocados for years. Check out our article on how to grow your own avocado tree.
5. Avocado Seeds as Natural Dye
A perhaps unexpected benefit of avocado seeds is that you can use them to make all-natural dye.
If you happen to need orange dye for crafting or watercolor painting, consider using avocado seeds. You can produce this natural orange color easily simply by crushing your avocado seed and soaking it in some water. Use a hammer to crush the seed and set it aside for a few hours. While the dye washes out of clothes, you can use it for painting with watercolors or dying craft projects. You can also use the dye for a DIY Halloween Costume with old clothes, or some other project in which you only need the clothing for a one-time use. The dye will wash out for the most part after that.
6. Benefits of Avocado Seeds: Clear Skin
Avocado seeds offer a load of benefits for your skin. The seeds contain fats, vitamin C, and antioxidants to make your skin glow. They also have anti-fungal and anti-microbial as well as anti-inflammatory properties. These properties might help avocado seeds fight acne and blemishes. To make an avocado seed face mask, you’ll need to dry the seeds first. Here is an easy recipe:
- Place the seeds in the oven at 250°F for two hours.
- Set them aside to cool.
- Once cooled down, chop up the seeds and place them in a food processor or blender.
- Blend the pieces until a powder forms.
- Mix the powder with a few teaspoons of water until a paste forms, and there you have your mask!
- Store your paste in the fridge for up to two months.
7. Joint Pain and Inflammation
Avocado seeds have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties which you can enjoy through topical use. One study even reported avocado seeds to be 1.8 times more powerful in anti-inflammatory effects than Ibuprofen. Next time you have joint pain or an inflamed painful area, talk to your doctor about applying an avocado seed paste to the area. In that case, the face mask recipe above doubles as a paste for treating inflammation.
