To make this simple, DIY all-natural Italian seasoning, you will need the following ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp. oregano, dried
  • 1 tbsp. parsley, dried
  • 1 tbsp. basil, dried
  • salt, to taste
  • pepper, to taste
  • 1 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp. onion powder
  • optional: red chili flakes, dried

and the following utensils:

  • a small bowl
  • a fork or spoon
  • a small airtight container

Tip: Remember to buy organic spices (you’ll find organic brands in grocery stores or on Amazon**) – or use ones you have grown yourself. If you have fresh basil and oregano in your garden, you can easily dry the spices yourself. Here’s how:

Instructions to prepare the seasoning:

  1. Combine the ingredients in a small bowl and mix with a spoon or fork. Add 1/2 teaspoon optional pepper flakes if you want a bit of heat.
  2. Transfer to a small air-tight container or tupperware. This dried mixture should be kept in a dry area, such as with your other spices. It will keep for a few months.

This DIY Italian dry seasoning mix can be used for many different types of food. It can be an additional spice, a dry rub, a dressing or can be used to simply add flavor to another marinade. Here are some examples:

  • As a salad dressing – if you want a simple salad dressing made with these Italian flavors, prepare the recipe in a small bowl and put to the side. For a larger, family-size salad, add 3/4 cup olive oil and 1/4 cup vinegar to the mixture and mix with a small whisk or fork. Add 1 tsp lemon juice. Mix or shake the mixture and then dress the salad.
  • For a bread dip – you might have tasted an olive oil dip at various Italian restaurants and want to recreate it at home. To do this, prepare the mixture of dry ingredients and place in a shallow dish. Add olive oil and red pepper flakes (optional) and use for a dip. To add a bit more flavor to this dip, add one clove of minced garlic.
  • Sauces – add the mixed ingredients to any sauce (such as tomato or marinara) to add more flavors to the base. If you’re making a pasta dish, these spices can bring depth to the richness of the sauce.
  • On chicken/meat – This seasoning works well on chicken or meat as a dry rub. Simply prepare the recipe and using your fingers, rub the seasoning on both sides of the chicken/meat before placing it in the oven or on the grill to cook.
  • Pizza – add the dried seasoning mix to pizza sauce if you’re making your own or to the cheese topping if you’re buying it. The flavors in pizza, especially with a tomato sauce, can be enhanced when you add this dry seasoning to them.
