For many of us, olive oil is a kitchen staple. While its culinary use is widespread, it can also be beneficial when used on the skin and face.

Positive effects olive oil can have on your face and skin include:

  • Olive oil can reduce the effects of skin damage and aging.
  • Olive oil has anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects when used topically due to the presence of molecules such as oleuropein, oleocanthal, and hydroxytyrosol.
  • Olive oil helps to heal wounds and restore the skin barrier.
  • Olive oil may be anti-cancerous and anti-tumorous when applied to skin after exposure to UVB radiation.

Olive oil can be found in many skincare and beauty products from lotions and moisturizers (like this one from Amazon**), to body and face washes.

It’s even possible to use olive oil directly on your face and skin to help moisturize. Be conservative when applying olive oil to your face and body because it can clog pores when too much is applied.

To use olive oil for your face

  1. Begin by cleansing your face.
  2. Massage a small amount of olive oil on your face using clean and dry hands.
  3. Gently dab away any excess oil with a towel or cotton pad.

Olive oil can also be used to help remove makeup. It is especially useful for removing makeup from the more sensitive eye area. Plus, it moisturizes simultaneously. Because olive oil alone will not remove all makeup, a facial cleanser is still required.

To use olive oil in your makeup removal routine:

  1. Massage small amounts of olive oil on your face wherever you have applied makeup.
  2. Apply a gentle facial cleanser to remove makeup.
  3. Rinse and dry clean face.

To use olive oil on your skin:

  1. Massage small amounts of olive oil into your skin (can be used on legs, arms, back, chest, stomach, and neck).
  2. Dab away excess oil with a towel.

Olive oil can also be used for hair

When deciding to try using olive oil on your face and body, quality is important. Make sure not to use pure olive oil, as opposed to oil blends. Also, try to obtain higher quality oil that is cold-pressed, and either organic or artisanal. The label form the International Olive Council certifies good quality olive oil if you aren’t sure how to pick one.

It is also important to test your skin’s reaction if you have never used olive oil topically before, in case of an allergy. If you have sensitive skin, oily skin, or a condition such as dermatitis, you may want to avoid using olive oil topically. Before attempting to use it on your face or skin, test a dime size amount on your forearm or leg and wait 24 hours to see if you have a reaction.
