Looking for a spiked apple cider recipe to help elevate your next gathering? We'll show you how to punch up the flavor to this boozy autumnal beverage.
A spiked apple cider recipe is a good thing to have as the days get colder and the holidays get closer. Hot apple cider works a treat when it comes to warming up after a day spent outdoors hiking, apple picking, or preparing your garden for winter.
Traditionally, spiked apple cider is made using darker spirits like rum or bourbon. You can choose to go with lighter spirits like vodka — just be aware that it won’t add much in terms of flavor, so you may want to use some of our other tips to bump up the taste. We’ll show you a basic spiked apple cider recipe and give you ideas for how to customize it.
Basic Spiked Apple Cider Recipe
The following recipe is for a basic hot spiked apple cider, however you can also substitute apple juice in for the cider if that’s all you have available.
Ingredients:
- 1 gallon organic apple cider
- 1 tbsp whole cloves
- 1 tbsp whole allspice
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 3 star anise
- 1½ cups spiced rum or flavored whiskey
Instructions:
- Add the apple cider, cinnamon, anise, cloves, and allspice to a large pot on the stove.
- Bring to a boil, cover, and reduce temperature to a simmer for 2 hours.
- When you’re ready to serve, remove the spices and add in the rum or whiskey.
Tip: you can also make this spiked apple cider recipe in the slow cooker, which can help conserve energy. Simply add the ingredients to your slow cooker and cook on low for 3 hours before adding in the alcohol.
Spiked Apple Cider Recipe Variations for Extra Flavor
There are several ways to ensure you pack the most punch with the flavor profile of your spiked apple cider. Consider using the following tips:
- Add sliced apples and oranges when you’re simmering the apple cider to bring some freshness.
- Always use whole spices and toast them before adding them to the pot.
- Simmer the apple cider on the stove for up to 3 hours to allow flavors to infuse.
- Try adding fresh sliced ginger to the pot — this option pairs really well with vodka.
- Choose the right alcohol pairing for your tastes.
