What Causes Dizziness?

Dizziness is the feeling of being lightheaded and unbalanced. Other symptoms of dizziness include feeling nauseous, seeing double vision, and hearing loss. There are many different causes of dizziness. These include motion sickness, migraines, medication, or alcohol. Dizziness can also be caused by problems in the inner ear, which can affect your balance, as well as other possible causes including a sudden drop in blood pressure, excessive exercise, anxiety, heatstroke, and dehydration.

Dizziness is common, and experiencing it from time to time is nothing to worry about. If you experience dizziness regularly or for prolonged periods of time, or if you experience dizziness with other symptoms such as chest pain, severe headache, or difficulty breathing, you should seek medical attention right away.

1. Ginger

Ginger is a plant that has been used for centuries to cure motion sickness and nausea, and is an easily accessible home remedy for dizziness. Research shows that ginger helps with symptoms of motion sickness and dizziness by preventing the development of gastric dysrhythmias and the elevation of plasma vasopressin. An older study further shows how ginger is effective at reducing vertigo. You can consume ginger in many ways, including taking ginger root supplements. You can also make your own ginger tea or ginger water, both of which have many health benefits.

2. Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo Biloba is a Chinese herb used to help with symptoms of dizziness and vertigo. One study shows that Ginkgo Biloba is just as effective at treating vertigo as conventional medications. The herb helps to reduce symptoms of dizziness by increasing circulation and blood flow to the brain. This can particularly help with balance issues. This home remedy for dizziness may be a bit more difficult to find, but if you don’t have a local Asian supermarket, you can always buy Ginkgo Biloba supplements on Amazon**. The herb also has many other uses for a wide range of health conditions including anxiety, Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, and Schizophrenia.

3. Balance Your Blood Sugar

Eating processed, sugary foods cause a spike in your blood sugar levels, as the body is able to break the sugars down rapidly. These foods include white pasta, white rice, and white bread. Eating whole, unprocessed foods such as whole-grain bread, brown rice, and wholemeal pasta can help to prevent dizziness, as these foods take longer to digest, and will help to stabilize your blood sugar levels. Eating a diet of whole-grain foods ensures your body is getting the nutrients that it needs. Regularly consuming whole grains is particularly beneficial for people who suffer with anaemia, a form of iron deficiency that often causes dizziness.

Some tips for avoiding dizziness include:

  • Sit or lie down when you start to feel dizzy. This will prevent you from losing your balance.
  • Do activities to improve your balance such as yoga. If yoga isn’t your thing, you can also investigate one of the many alternatives to yoga out there.
  • Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and tobacco, as these substances may trigger dizziness or make symptoms worse.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
  • If your dizziness is caused by overheating, sit in a cool place and drink water.
