You'll love how quick it is to make this chickpea pizza crust. Only five minutes to cook the crust on the stove and another five to cook the topping of your choice. Simple!

It only takes five minutes to make this tasty chickpea pizza crust, a great meal for the whole family, or a quick snack to share. There are only three ingredients — chickpea flour, water and salt, and the pizza is cooked on the stove. Add your favorite pizza topping and cook for a further five minutes and voilà, your pizza is done!

This chickpea pizza base is so different from a regular pizza base as there is no dough or yeast involved. Simply whisk the chickpea flour and water into a batter, pour it into the skillet pan and cook. The batter will crisp on the outside and be soft in the middle when cooked.

One of the benefits of using chickpea flour over wheat-based flour is that it has more protein than carbohydrates, making it a healthy alternative. It is also gluten-free, making it a great pizza choice for those with gluten intolerance.

Read on to learn how to make your own tasty, crispy chickpea pizza crust.

Yield: 8 slices of pizza

Ingredients:

  • Pinch of salt
  • 2/3 cup water
  • 1 cup chickpea flour
  • 1 tbsp. vegetable oil or vegan butter for greasing

Instructions:

  1. In a medium-sized mixing bowl whisk the salt, water and chickpea flour together.
  2. Lightly grease a medium-sized skillet pan with vegetable oil or vegan butter and warm on medium heat.
  3. Pour the mixture into the frying pan, ensuring it spreads out evenly.
  4. Cook the pizza base for two minutes, then use a spatula to lift it and turn it over and cook the other side for a further two minutes.

You can choose to finish cooking the pizza in the skillet pan (covered) or in the oven for five to ten minutes, until the topping starts to crisp and go golden brown. Check out some pizza topping ideas below.

Now the pizza base is ready, it’s time to choose the topping. Pizzas are so versatile that you can put pretty much anything you want on the top. Let’s start with the basics — a Margarita pizza is cheese and tomato. Simply spread some tomato paste on the top of the pizza and sprinkle grated vegan cheese on top and bake in the oven at 430 °F for five to ten minutes, until the cheese has melted and started to brown. Add fresh basil and a drizzle of olive oil to serve.

For something with more vegetables, try a spinach and feta pizza, packed full of iron (not vegan, though). Alternatively, go for our wild garlic pizza, it’s topped with bell peppers, button mushrooms, chili, wild garlic and kale — a rainbow of flavors!
