Weather changes can often wreak havoc on our skin, especially our face as the elements attempt to penetrate its many layers. In order to combat skin concerns, what’s needed is a punch of moisture. Instead of reaching for a new, expensive product, try this simple 5-ingredient DIY face moisturizer made from products you (likely) already have at home.

Ingredients for the DIY Face Moisturizer:

  • Coconut oil is a staple in many products out there because it has multiple health benefits. Important for the skin are its moisturizing properties and its large influx of vitamin E. If you don’t already own some, remember to always purchase organic (available on Amazon**).
  • Aloe is an important ingredient, as it is known to invigorate the skin by helping achieve the skin’s natural moisture balance and is even able to protect the skin from harmful UV radiation. It’s not just a well-known aid for soothing sunburn, but one way to protect the skin from receiving it in the first place. Try this home remedy for sunburn. You want an organic aloe vera gel for this recipe (available on Amazon**).
  • Shea butter is another great natural ingredient. Its long history and repeated use show how beneficial it truly is. It is rich in antioxidants and vitamins A and E that help the skin to regenerate. It reduces inflammation and is said to contain anti-aging properties that make it a key ingredient in our moisturizer. Although you might also find shea butter in your hair shampoos or body lotion, it is safe to use on your face. Remember to buy an organic shea butter product (available on Amazon**).
  • Olive oil is not just for cooking – it has properties that help moisturize and keep skin smooth. It has many health benefits and can even be used on your hair to keep moisture in your strands in winter.
  • Avocado has many health benefits, making it another key ingredient in our moisturizer. It contains many vitamins that help protect and regenerate skin. Avocados are also full of good fats and antioxidants that, as studies suggest, may protect cells from damage.

Other Items:

  • Food processor or blender
  • Measuring spoons

After you have purchased your organic products, it’s time to prep them. This DIY face moisturizer recipe only has five simple steps.

  1. Remove the avocado skin and the pit. (Save the pit and grow your own avocado tree!) Place the pulp inside your food processor or blender.
  2. Next, measure your oils: Add 2 tbsp olive oil and 2 tbsp coconut oil to the blender or food processor
  3. Measure out 3 tbsps aloe and put in the food processor or blender
  4. Measure out 1/4 cup shea butter and add to blender or food processor
  5. Blend all ingredients together until smooth

Using Your DIY Face Moisturizer

Once your mixture is smooth, remove it from the food processor or blender and transfer it to an airtight container. Using two fingers, apply the mixture to your face and blend in circular motions for all-day moisture.
