What you put on your body is just as important as what you put in it, which is why natural products are the way to go. We’ll show you how to make a simple homemade belly butter using natural ingredients.
If you currently are pregnant or have ever been pregnant, you’ll know the struggle of constantly having tight, dry, and itchy skin on your belly. You might also be worried about the development of stretch marks, which are said to be easier to prevent than treat. This is where belly butter comes in. Keeping the constantly stretching skin well hydrated can help relieve that tight and itchy feeling. We’ll show you how to make a DIY belly butter to keep your skin soft and smooth.
How To Make Belly Butter To Prevent Stretch Marks
Pregnancy is a time when you’re extra aware of what you’re putting into your body, and the same thought applies to what you’re putting on your body. Making your own belly butter is the best way to know exactly what ingredients are going into it, and to tailor it to your own consistency and scent preferences. It’s also a good idea to use organic ingredients, as it ensures that harsh chemical pesticides and herbicides don’t make their way into your moisturizer. Here’s how to make DIY belly butter.
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp organic almond oil
- 1 tbsp organic avocado oil
- 2 tbsp organic shea butter
- 2 tbsp organic coconut oil
- ½ tbsp vitamin E oil
- 2 tbsp organic beeswax
- 8 drops lavender essential oil
- 8 drops lemon essential oil
- 8 drops eucalyptus essential oil
Instructions
- Using a double boiler (available on Amazon**), heat all the oils (minus the essential oils) and the beeswax over medium heat.
- Wait until the beeswax is fully melted and combined with the rest of the oils, then remove from heat.
- Pour the mixture into a sterilized glass jar, and whisk the essential oils into the mixture.
- Allow the mixture to sit at room temperature for approximately 24 hours, or until hardened.
DIY Belly Butter Tips & Tricks
For best results, you’ll want to spread your homemade belly butter liberally on your midsection 2 – 3 times a day. This gives your skin plenty of chances to absorb and make use of the nourishing properties of the ingredients, especially vitamin E, which is said to firm your skin and help with its elasticity.
You can substitute cocoa butter for shea butter for an extra hydrating belly butter, as it tends to hydrate multiple layers of skin. However, cocoa butter tends to harden up in cooler climates, so you’ll need to balance it out with a bit more avocado oil. Additionally, cocoa butter has a very recognizable scent, so you’ll want to stick to essential oils that will complement it like orange or peppermint.
You can also alter the scent of your belly butter using any pregnancy-safe essential oil like chamomile, frankincense, lemon, orange, peppermint, and ylang-ylang. If you’re worried about using essential oils during pregnancy, you can omit them altogether. It’s also worth double-checking with your healthcare provider before you start using homemade belly butter during pregnancy, just to be on the safe side!
