When you throw away potato peels, you’re getting rid of a very valuable part of the vegetable. To reduce food waste, try making these tasty fried potato skins using leftover potato peels!
One of the best parts about cooking your own meals is learning how to make the most of every ingredient. Whether that’s regrowing vegetables from scraps, or using parts of fruits and vegetables that might normally go to waste, you’d be surprised at what you can do with a little creativity.
Many recipes call for peeled potatoes, which is a shame because the peels are a great source of potassium, iron, and vitamin B3. By throwing away the peels, you’re getting rid of all of those nutrients. Instead of letting those valuable potato peels go to waste, make a tasty snack with our recipe for fried potato skins.
Fried Potato Skins Recipe
When peeling potatoes for other recipes, save those scraps and turn them into a delicious and crispy snack with our fried potato peel recipe – think of them as DIY potato chips. Just be sure to give the potatoes a good scrub before peeling them so you don’t end up with dirt on the skins. Here’s how to make them:
Ingredients
- leftover potato peels
- vegetable or olive oil
- salt and pepper, to taste
Air Fryer Instructions
- Place the potato skins on a clean tea towel to remove any excess liquid.
- Add the potato peels into the air fryer basket and spritz them with oil and a pinch of salt and pepper
- Air fry at 400F for about 5-7 minutes, stopping halfway through to give the basket a shake and another spritz of oil and seasoning.
- During the last half of the frying time, check on them consistently to ensure they’re crispy, but not burnt.
Deep Fryer Instructions
- Place the potato skins on a clean tea towel to remove any excess liquid.
- Heat the oil in your deep fryer to 375F and fry the peels for 2-3 minutes or until golden and crispy
- Drain excess oil off and sprinkle with salt and pepper.
Oven Instructions
- While you preheat the oven to 400F, place the potato skins on a clean tea towel to remove any excess liquid.
- Add the potato peels to a baking tray and drizzle oil on top and sprinkle with salt and pepper.
- Roast in the oven for approximately 20 minutes, stirring halfway through for even coverage.
- Remove when golden and crispy.
Topping Variations
The best part about making fried potato peels is that you can top them with whatever you’d like. Add vegan cheese and gravy for a Canadian twist, drizzle your fried potato peels with a delicious vegan cheese sauce, or chop up some fresh herbs from your kitchen herb garden to sprinkle on top.
Sweet Potato Peels & Other Vegetable Scraps
This recipe isn’t limited to just potato peels – you can actually use several different types of vegetable peels to make crunchy chips. If you have leftover peels from carrots, parsnips, or sweet potatoes, you can use them in the same way as potato peels in the above recipe for fried potato skins.
In addition, you can even freeze your leftover peels until you have a batch large enough to fry. Simply pat the scraps dry with a clean tea towel and add to a reusable freezer container. Once you have enough skins, defrost them, drain any excess liquid and fry them as mentioned above. It’s a great way to cut back on food waste!
