Ginger ale is a much loved beverage due to its versatile uses, ranging from cocktails to stomach aches. We’ll show you how to make your own homemade ginger ale.

The origins of ginger ale are thought to trace back to both Ireland and Canada. The golden, sweeter ginger ale was invented in 1851 by an apothecary in Belfast, while the paler and drier version was invented by a Canadian pharmacist in Toronto. This is where the name “Canada Dry” came from.

While the original version most certainly contained plenty of ginger, store-bought varieties today contain less than 2 percent of ginger extract. In order to ensure you enjoy that zingy ginger taste, and help cut back on packaging waste, learn how to make your own homemade ginger ale.

If you’re a fan of canned or bottled ginger ale, you’ll notice that homemade ginger ale actually has more of a ginger flavor. This not only allows you to reap more of the health benefits of ginger, it also has a much more natural taste. Here’s how to make homemade ginger ale:

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups water
  • 1 cup ginger, peeled and chopped
  • 2 large pieces lemon rind (yellow only)
  • ¾ cup organic cane sugar
  • Sparkling water
  • Organic lime slices or wedged

Instructions:

  1. Add ginger, lemon, and water to a saucepan and bring to a boil over high heat.
  2. Reduce heat and simmer for approximately 10 minutes.
  3. Stir in sugar, and boil until the liquid is reduced by half. During this time, keep stirring to avoid burning the sugar.
  4. Using a mesh strainer, pour the liquid into a separate container, and discard the lemon peel. Save the ginger pieces for other delicious recipes such as candied ginger.
  5. Allow the syrup to cool completely before using, or store in an airtight container for up to 1 week.
  6. Serve chilled, using a ¼ cup syrup to 1 cup sparkling water ratio. Garnish with lime slices or wedges.
