The Ho’oponopono mantra is a traditional Hawaiian practice of forgiveness and reconciliation. Learn how to practice the mantra for forgiving others, as well as how to practice it for loving yourself.

Ho’oponopono is a powerful healing practice that originates from Hawaii. This ancient Hawaiian practice is used for both forgiveness towards others, as well as self love and self forgiveness, and is traditionally practiced by indigenous Hawaiian healers. Chanting this mantra is a form of self love by which you are cleansing your mind and body of bad thoughts, guilt and shame. The expression comes from the word ho’o (meaning to make or to try) and pono (meaning right or honest). The mantra therefore means to “cause things to move back in balance”.

The Ho’oponopono Mantra

The Ho’oponopono chant is simple: 

 “I’m sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you. I love you.”

  1. “I’m sorry.” Accept that you are responsible for everything in your mind, whether it is a positive or negative feeling. By saying I’m sorry, you are accepting that you are responsible for an issue in your life.
  2. “Please forgive me.” It doesn’t matter who you are asking for foregiveness, it can be anyone, including yourself. But repeat the line over and over again. 
  3. “Thank you.” Say thank you to whoever just forgave you. 
  4. “I love you.” Say I love you to yourself and everything around you.

In traditional practice, the Hoʻoponopono mantra is usually conducted by the most senior member of a family and is used to restore and maintain good relationships between family members. One of the reasons that this mantra is so powerful for forgiving others is that you accept and acknowledge the wrong before asking for forgiveness. By asking for forgiveness, you are essentially letting go of the past and gaining complete freedom. This avoids potential revenge or avoidance.

Forgiveness is a powerful tool for wellbeing, and studies show that forgiveness can improve mental health, including anxiety and depression. Perhaps you have had an argument with a friend or family member and want to heal and ask for forgiveness. You can practice Ho’oponopono as a form of meditation and mindfulness. Sit with your legs crossed and your eyes closed, and focus on your breathing. Repeat the line “I’m sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you. I love you.”

Forgiveness is a form of self love that allows you to make peace with yourself, and Ho’oponopono is a healing system that can also be used for self forgiveness and self love. Practicing Ho’oponopono for self love helps to restore balance, as it allows us to process emotional challenges in our lives. You can chant the mantra anywhere, but it can also be done as a form of meditation.

To practice Ho’oponopono for self love, sit with your eyes closed, and take deep breaths. Slowly repeat the mantra to yourself about seven or either times; “I’m sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you. I love you. Regularly chanting this mantra will strengthen your self love and self esteem as you strengthen your sense of value for yourself. As you regularly practice the mantra, negative self-talk and low self esteem can be replaced by positivity and confidence.
