Marshmallow fluff is a popular ingredient used as a sandwich spread and in baking, but is marshmallow fluff vegan? Let's take a closer look.

Marshmallows are a popular year-round treat, and are often popular toasted or placed on top of drinks like homemade hot chocolate. Though not traditionally vegan, plant-based versions of these sweet treats are available in grocery stores around the country.

Marshmallows aren’t the only form that U.S. consumers enjoy. Marshmallow fluff, or creme, is a very popular confectionary spread used on fluffernutter sandwiches and as an ingredient in baked goods. Vegan marshmallows may be available in stores, but is marshmallow fluff vegan? Let’s take a look.

So, is marshmallow fluff vegan? The short answer is yes – vegan marshmallow fluff does exist. Most marshmallow products are usually not vegan as they contain gelatin, which is an animal protein that is derived from the tendons, ligaments, and skin of animals. Gelatin is responsible for giving marshmallows the gooey and stretchy texture that they are best known for.

When it comes to finding vegan marshmallows and marshmallow fluff, you need to be on the lookout for specific brands. You can do your own research by checking the ingredients list to ensure items like gelatin or egg whites aren’t on it.

You can make your own vegan marshmallow fluff straight from the comfort of your own kitchen, and it’s actually pretty simple. Just follow the recipe below:

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup aquafaba
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ¼ tsp cream of tartar (optional)
  • ¾ cup white sugar

Instructions:

  1. Add the aquafaba, vanilla, and cream of tartar into a bowl and beat with a whisk or electric hand mixer for one minute until fluffy.
  2. Next, add your white sugar one spoonful at a time, sprinkling it slowly into your mixture. Mix at the same time.
  3. Beat the mixture for 10 minutes until a stiff peak forms.
  4. To test, jiggle your bowl. The peak should stay where it is.

If you fancy some marshmallows alongside your fluff, you could try your hand at making gelatin-free marshmallows. You can add these to a warm drink, or even eat them on their own.
