The basic ingredients for any classic chai tea latte recipe are:

  • cardamom
  • star anise
  • cloves
  • cinnamon
  • black pepper

Ready-made chai latte mixes or tea bags have nothing on the refreshing flavor of fresh herbs and spices. And drinks at the coffee shop are often packed with sugar. So better make your own homemade, authentic chai latte with the following recipes – all natural, all from scratch.

Recipe Prep Time: around 15 minutes.

This chai tea latte recipe will spice up your day like no other. For two cups, you’ll need the following ingredients:

  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2 star anise
  • 1/2 tsp. dried cloves
  • 1/2 tsp. black peppercorn
  • 1 1/2 tsp. whole cardamom
  • 1 piece of ginger about the size of your thumb
  • 1 tsp. sugar (sugar substitutes: honey, coconut palm sugar or birch sugar)
  • 2 cups of a plant-based milk of your choice
  • 1 tbsp. black tea

How to make vegan chai tea latte:

  1. Combine all the spices (cinnamon, anise, cloves, pepper and cardamom) in a grinder. Leave the sugar aside. Roughly grind.
  2. Slide the ginger into thin slices as you would when preparing ginger tea.
  3. Next, combine the spices in a small pot and roast at low heat without oil until aromatic.
  4. Add the ginger along with 1 1/4 cups of water and bring to a boil.
  5. Now add the plant milk and sugar.
  6. At medium heat, bring everything to a boil. Remove the pot from the stove as soon as the tea begins to boil.
  7. Add the black tea to the pot and steep for five minutes.
  8. Finish up by running the tea through a strainer, fill up a cup and get cozy on the couch. Enjoy your chai latte!

Pro tip: The milk may clump up when brought to a boil. You can avoid this by heating the milk first separately and then adding it to the tea mixture.
