Taking care of your lips is an important part of any beauty routine, but sometimes when it comes to preventing dried-out lips, chapstick alone doesn’t cut it. We’ll show you how to make homemade lip scrub to keep your lips nice and soft.

Everyone experiences chapped lips sometimes, and there are a ton of reasons why. Eating excessive amounts of salty or spicy food can dehydrate them, as can habits such as smoking or licking your lips too often. Weather conditions like extreme temperatures, wind, and sun can also contribute to cracked and dry lips.

If you’ve ever experienced lips so dry that the skin starts to flake, you’ll know that even the most extreme lip balms won’t provide the aid you need. That’s where an exfoliating homemade lip scrub comes into play. Exfoliating your lips can help to remove the layer of dried and flaky skin, leaving your lips soft and smooth.

What is Lip Scrub?

Simply put, a lip scrub is key to maintaining healthy and hydrated lips. Whether you purchase it from a store or make your own DIY version, all lip scrubs include:

  • an exfoliant (the smoothing agent)
  • an emollient (the hydrating agent)

There is a wide range of ingredients that can be used to make a homemade lip scrub. Popular exfoliants include sugar, coffee grounds, or even a toothbrush. Meanwhile, typical emollients range from coconut oil and olive oil, to shea butter or honey. You don’t need a long list of complicated ingredients to make an effective scrub. However, when shopping for ingredients, it’s important to look for organic and fair-trade whenever possible, especially with items like coffee and coconut oil.

Things to Keep in Mind:

  • Try not to over-exfoliate — limit your use of DIY lip scrub to once a week not to irritate your lips.
  • Use natural ingredients and scrub gently to prevent irritated wounds.

A DIY sugar lip scrub can be made using ingredients most people already have in their pantry.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp organic cane sugar
  • 1½ tbsp extra virgin organic olive oil
  • ¼ tsp pure organic vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Combine ingredients in a small mixing bowl using your fingers.
  2. Make sure to break down any lumps that have formed, so you have a nice smooth sugar scrub.
  3. Store in an airtight container for up to 6 weeks.

How to Use Homemade Lip Scrub

Apply a small amount of the scrub to your lips and gently scrub in a circular motion for approximately 1 minute with your fingertip. Using a warm washcloth, gently wipe to remove your homemade sugar lip scrub, and then be sure to use some homemade chapstick afterward to lock that hydration in.

Tip: You can use a homemade lip scrub to soothe dry and cracked lips or as a way to remove homemade lipstick.
