Our recipe for homemade lip gloss can be made from a small list of simple ingredients. All you need is:

  • 1 tablespoon of grated beeswax
  • 2 tablespoons of organic coconut oil
  • 2 tablespoons of organic coconut butter or shea butter
  • 4 tablespoons of grapeseed oil or olive oil
  • Metal or glass lip gloss containers (Available at drug stores or online**)
  • Your favorite-smelling essential oils (optional)

Sustainable living tip: Always buy organic or fair trade ingredients if you can – and always check where the ingredients are made. Instead of buying beeswax and coconut oil generated from industrial farms, stop by a local farmers’ market to find your organic lip gloss ingredients for this recipe.

  1. Add beeswax, coconut oil, coconut butter (or shea butter), and grapeseed oil (or olive oil) into a measuring cup or mason jar.
  2. Pour ingredients into a stovetop-safe pan and put it on medium heat. Stir ingredients every few minutes until everything is melted completely.
  3. If you want, add a few drops (5-6) of essential oils to the mix and stir in. Be sure not to overdo this part, as you don’t want your lip gloss to smell too strong. Skip if you have sensitive skin or any skin disorders. (BTW, want to know more about essential oils? Check out our piece on Clove Essential Oil Benefits & Side Effects)
  4. Turn off stove and pour mixture into individual lip gloss containers. Let cool for at least 20 minutes or until mixture has become solid before applying. Cover and store the containers in a dark, cool place.

Homemade vs. Store Bought Lip Gloss

And the process is that easy! Natural lip gloss is a great, eco-friendly alternative to store-bought lip gloss. Many lip glosses contain a multitude of unnatural (and potentially unhealthy) ingredients, such as synthetic colorings, preservatives and fragrances. Using this homemade lip gloss recipe and storing your products in reusable containers is a great way to make sure you’re doing right by the environment and your body.
