If you have woken up feeling a little worse for wear after a few too many cocktails, here are eight tips for the best way to get over a hangover, quickly and naturally.
Hangovers can last anywhere from just a few hours, to over twenty-four. Fatigue, an upset stomach, headache, thirst, sweating and a general sluggish feeling, are all common the morning after a night of heavy drinking. The reasons as to why one person will suffer more than another despite having consumed the same drinks is still not known, and unfortunately, there is no cure for a hangover. Of course the best way to prevent one is to avoid alcohol or to drink in moderation.
Sometimes we could all do with a little help the morning after the night before. Thankfully there are some things that you can do to relieve the symptoms and to get you through the day. Here are eight of the best ways to get over a hangover.
1. Best Way to Get Over a Hangover: Get Hydrated
Alcohol is a diuretic and makes you pee more that usual, leading you to become dehydrated. Many of us forget to have a glass of water or a soft drink between alcoholic beverages, meaning that the essential fluids are not being replaced quickly enough. To combat a dry mouth, thirst, and a headache, fill a bottle or a large glass with water and sip it little and often. Remember that not all bottles are suitable for re-use, so learn how to reuse a water bottle safely.
2. Eat Some Carbs
Drinking alcohol decreases your blood glucose concentration while simultaneously increasing lactic acid production, further inhibiting the production of glucose. Getting your blood sugar level up and stable with complex carbohydrates and some protein might help you get over the worst of it: if you can stomach it, try eating a bowl of protein oats. If not, a slice of toast and some freshly squeezed juice would also be helpful. Drinking on an empty stomach is also not great, so try to eat a balanced, healthy meal before you head to the bar. A vegan baked potato, vegan baked mac & cheese, or vegan hash is a great start to a night out.
3. Settle Your Stomach With Ginger
That extra glass of wine might have been delicious, but it might have wreaked havoc on your gastro-intestinal situation. Alcohol can affect the stomach lining by increasing stomach acid production. There’s little point in eating if you can’t keep anything down, so why not try sipping on some ginger tea? Ginger has a lot of health benefits and is a natural antiemetic, meaning that it can help with nausea and vomiting.
Using fresh ginger, cut and peel thumb-sized piece and allow to steep in a cup of freshly boiled water for six minutes. Feel free to add a squeeze of lemon, too.
4. Replenish Lost Electrolytes to Get Over a Hangover
The diuretic effect of alcohol and the dehydration that accompanies it is not just a loss of water — essential electrolytes like sodium, magnesium and potassium are also lost. These are necessary to stay hydrated and to maintain a healthy balance of minerals in our bodies. There are plenty of oral rehydration solutions on the market, but they are often expensive, come in single use packaging, or contain additives. Why not replenish your inner electric charge with a homemade electrolyte drink?
5. Take a Nap
We may feel extra tired after a few beers, but unfortunately the sleep that we get after a night out isn’t the best quality. If we are unable to experience a deep sleep, it is unlikely that we have been able to get the rest that the body needs. Sleeping in a little later or having a nap in the day could leave you feeling less fatigued. A nap also has the added bonus of you sleeping through some of your hangover.
6. Eat a Banana
A medium banana has 450 milligrams of potassium and contains magnesium, so eating a banana could help to replenish some of the lost electrolytes and give you a boost of energy. 7. Try Turmeric for That Headache
Curcumin which is present in turmeric, has been associated with helping with migraine and headaches and is believed to have many health benefits. Why not try adding a little turmeric to your oats, or sipping on a turmeric latte? It couldn’t hurt and might turn out to be a good way to get over your hangover.
8. Get Some Exercise
We aren’t recommending a game of football, but some fresh air and a little movement can help combat the fatigue, grogginess and low mood we often experience with a hangover. Plus, some evidence suggests that oxygen could reduce alcohol related side effects. Getting out and about is one of the best ways to relieve many of the symptoms of a hangover. Moving a little will give you ane energy boost today and will have a positive knock-on effect for tomorrow, leaving you feeling less achy and sluggish.
