Almond milk is a great vegan alternative to traditional milk, made from just nuts and water. Does almond milk go bad? We’ll look at what affects its longevity.

Almond milk is a popular dairy-free and plant-based beverage among vegans, with the market expected to reach a whopping total of $17.9 billion by the year 2027. Judging from these statistics, it is clearly a drink that is enjoyed by many.

This popular beverage is made from water and almonds, blended together before being strained. You can even make homemade almond milk yourself. However, as well as being suitable for vegans, it also has a lower environmental impact compared to dairy milk. That is because its production uses less land and produces lower greenhouse gas emissions.

If you want to make the switch or have already done so, you may be wondering: does almond milk go bad? We’ll break down how long this nutty beverage lasts so you can make the best use of it.

If you’ve never tried it before or have only recently started buying it, you may be wondering if almond milk goes bad. Like most foods, nut milks go bad eventually. However, how long it lasts depends on a few factors. Let’s take a look at some of them.

  • Unopened and in the fridge: Shelf-stable almond milk will last anywhere between one to two months. However, once you open it, it will only last for between seven to 10 days.
  • Unopened and on the counter: In this scenario, it should last around three weeks after the date on the package at room temperature. Once it’s opened, you should store it in the fridge.

However, how do you check if it has gone bad? Checking if your almond milk has gone bad is fairly simple — it will taste sour, have a thicker texture, and may even be clumpy. These are all signs that you should throw it out. It may also smell off or have a weird scent, which is again another sign that you need to get rid of it.

Separation can also occur, but it’s still safe to drink in this state. All you need to do is mix and blend it together and you should be good to go. If you want to use all your almond milk before it turns bad, there are some easy ways to do so. Using all of it lowers the amount of food waste you create.

There are many ways to use up all your almond milk. It’s is always best when consumed fresh, so you should try and use it within the recommended time period. Taking this into consideration, we’ll show you how you can use your nut milk. So, what can you do with it?

One great option is to add it to your favorite hot or cold beverages like hot chocolate, pumpkin spice lattes, chai tea lattes, or turmeric milk. You can also add it to some of your favorite meals. Try incorporating it into your favorite cereal, with your overnight oats, in overnight chia pudding, or into your favorite smoothie. However, you can also use it while cooking. Simply replace recipes with cow’s milk with almond milk and enjoy.

An alternative to using it in your cooking is freezing it. Freezing almond milk is fairly simple. All you have to do is pop it in a stainless steel or glass container while it is still drinkable and place it flat in the freezer. You can also use ice cube trays as an alternative. If it separates when you defrost it, blend it until it’s mixed together well.
