This easy two-ingredient homemade sugar scrub — suitable for your body AND your face — helps keep your skin fresh and will leave you with a healthy glow. Follow this step-by-step guide to do it yourself.
Exfoliating your skin regularly is a great way of removing dead skin cells, oils, and dirt that collect on your skin. It also generates good circulation throughout the body and is said to stimulate collagen, which helps your skin stay firm and bright.
However, a lot of store-bought scrubs have long ingredients lists, some which are chemicals that can be harmful to you (like allergens), or the environment once they’re down the drain (like microplastics). And all of them are unnecessary, since you can easily make DIY scrubs for body and face yourself, using two natural ingredients: sugar and oil. Making your own, all-natural sugar scrub will therefore improve your skin without harming the planet — or your wallet, as the ingredients to this easy scrub are most probably already in your pantry.
Sugar Scrub for Body and Face: DIY Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1 cup pure cane sugar (or brown sugar; find out whether your sugar is vegan, if that’s important to you)
- 3 to 5 tbsp oil of choice (we recommend either unrefined, organic coconut oil, jojoba oil, olive oil, or sesame oil)
- Splash of fresh lemon juice (optional)
Instructions:
- Add the sugar to a bowl.
- Add the oil one tablespoon at a time and mix. The consistency should be sandy: if you think the scrub is turning soapy, stop adding oil.
- If you want to, you can add a splash of lemon juice, which will give the scrub a fruity note.
- For storage, add the scrub into a sterilized jar or container you can seal tight.
Your homemade sugar scrub can last for a few months, but is best used within four weeks.
How to Use the All-Natural Sugar Scrub
For best results, use your DIY sugar scrub on the body after a shower or bath: Pat your skin dry, and apply the scrub, rubbing in soft, circular motions. Rinse off with warm water.
When using on your face, take extra care and rub the scrub in soft circular motions. Take care around the eyes (although this is an all-natural sugar scrub, you do not want to get it into your eyes or mouth).
Please note: It is important not to overuse the sugar scrub on your skin. Two to three times a week allow for best results.
